At least 40 students were injured in a clash between the activists of pro-Awami League Bangladesh Chhatra League and pro-BNP Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal at Jagannath University in the capital yesterday.
Tension gripped the students, particularly the admission seekers, in the wake of the clashes. Large contingents of police and RAB rushed to the spot to prevent further eruption.
Campus sources said when a procession of BCL led by VP Ripon and GS Syed was passing by the Arts Building of the university, JCD
activists hurled brickbats at them, triggering a clash at 1.30pm.
“Chase and counter-chase between the two groups continued for about half an hour, scaring all on the university campus,” said an
eyewitness account of the violence.
Other sources said the clashes were triggered by an attack on BCL leader Mehedi by JCD activists at about 10.30 am.
During the clashes, leaders and activists from both the BCL and the JCD swooped on each other with hockey sticks and other weapons. They also traded brickbats and stones for half an hour.
Later, riot police brought the situation under control.
Among the injured BCL activists, Soikat, Ashrafuzzaman, Sujon, Faruk, Onim, Monir, Arif, Mitun, Ruhul Amin and Mehedi were admitted to a clinic while JCD activist Aslam was rushed to Mitford Hospital.
Police patrols were put on high alert on the troubled campus in the highly busy part of the city, as tensions were prevailing between the rival activists of the student wings of the two squabbling major political parties-Awami League and BNP.
Meanwhile, the distribution and submission of admission forms have remained suspended.
